Spring Term 2019
Happy New Year! Below you will find an outline of the topics we will be covering this half term, as well as reminders of our classroom routines in Year 5.
Homework will be handed out each Friday and collected in on a Thursday. Any additional tasks relating to other subjects will be written in their homework diary, so please ensure you check these regularly. Your child should also be taking responsibility for practising their times tables and reading regularly at home. Reading books are expected to be in school every day.
In Maths this term children will practise and extend their use of the efficient written method of short multiplication and short division. They apply all the multiplication tables and related division facts frequently, commit them to memory and use them confidently to make lager calculations. They will use and understand the term factor, multiple, and prime, square and cube numbers.
Our English this term will be based around our topic ‘Around the World in 80 days.’ We will study a variety of text types, and write for a number of purposes, including to inform, to persuade and to entertain.
We will be focusing on the following areas:
Computer science – solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts, use selection. Use logical reasoning to detect and correct errors in algorithms
IT – use and combine software
Digital Literacy – be discerning in evaluating digital content.
Our topic this term is Forces. We will be welcoming an Earth Science student and will be visited by Captain Chemistry.
This term has a geography focus: ‘Around the world in 80 days’.
The topic will also include opportunities for textile and sculpture work within Art and DT.
This half term we will be covering Gymnastics. Lessons will take place on a Thursday – correct PE kit should, however, be in school all week, as we do occasionally have the opportunity for extra PE sessions at other times. PE kit is a navy t-shirt and shorts, and black plimsolls. Jogging bottoms and trainers would be advisable also as PE will be outdoors wherever possible. Earrings must be removed or covered, and hair tied back.
This term we will be studying the three themes of Local Church (Community), Eucharist (Relating) and Lent/Easter (Giving). We will approach the themes through different topics. The first topic is Mission and children will be able to make links between how Jesus undertook his mission to share the Good News and how each diocese continues that mission and work today. The following topic is Sacrifice and the children will be able to make links to show how feelings and beliefs about memories affect their own behaviour and that of others. The final topic, this term, is Transformation and the children will be able to make links to show how feelings and beliefs about the use of transforming energy affects their behaviour and that of others.
The children will be exploring African drumming and have already improvised an African drum using their empty trays!
We do hope you find this information useful – as always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
