Spring Term 2019
I hope you are all well and had a relaxing Christmas break! Here is some information about this term which I hope you will find useful. Our student teacher, Miss Tweddle, will be joining us this half term and will be teaching Year 6 alongside myself.
Y6 children will be focusing on the following mathematical aspects:
- Conversion between decimals, fractions and percentages
- Conversion between units of measure
- Position, direction and translation of shapes in a grid
- Measuring and identifying angles
For our fiction unit, Year 6 will be using ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ to focus our English work around. We will use this novel to concentrate on:
- Exploring how writers use language for dramatic effect;
- Writing diary extracts
- Newspaper articles
- Links to our WW2 topic
Each week we will have a new grammar, punctuation and spelling focus which will be incorporated into our lessons.
Please encourage your child to learn their spellings on a weekly basis. In addition to this, please ensure your child is reading regularly and making a brief commentary in their reading record book every week.
Themes this half term: we will be looking at the Local Church unit where our topic will be ‘Mission’. This topic will look at answering questions such as; ‘What inspires people in their mission?’ ‘What unites Christian communities?’ and understanding the joys and demands of engaging in a mission. We then have a Eucharist topic which emphasises on memorial sacrifice in the Jewish sense of remembering. Then we have our Lent/ Easter topic where we will explore the theme of ‘sacrifice’ and understanding it is a time of giving in preparation for the celebration of the sacrifice of Jesus. Additionally – we will have an Islam focus week, looking at various aspects of the Islamic faith in-line with our curriculum.
Our science topic this term is ‘Properties and Changes of Materials’ c where children will look at dissolving, separating mixtures, irreversible reactions, heating and cooling and burning. Our second topic will be ‘Forces’ where we will work with Captain Chemistry on a range of experiments exploring this topic.
Computing will be integrated into different areas of the curriculum. Children will continue to learn how to be safe online while using computers within various lessons.
Please ensure your child brings the correct kit on a Monday morning and takes it home on a Friday. Children will have a PE lesson focusing on gymnastics on a Thursday with our sports coach and select children will continue swimming lessons on a Friday.
We will learn to talk about ourselves and family members and will continue to write to our French pen pals.
Topic this half term will be looking at World War 2. Children will learn why the war started and put together a timeline of events that happened during WW2. They will learn what it was like to be a child living through the war and what life was like for an evacuee.
The theme this half term is ‘Going for Goals’, focusing specifically on children setting themselves a goal or challenge. They will learn how to make long-term personal or learning goals and break it down into smaller achievable goals.
Homework and spellings will be handed out on a Friday and will need to be handed in on a WEDNESDAY. Children will also have their spelling test on this Wednesday.
Full PE kits should be in school all week.
Please check and sign your child’s homework diary on a weekly basis.
